SLC BREAKOUTS
BREAKOUT SESSION 1 (10:30-11:30)
Putting the “Social” back in Social Media // Room 1101
Led by Kendall Russ (Beach Students Creative Coordinator)
How can we use social media in a way that leads to real connections, shows people we are FOR them, and actually engages teens?
Creating Life Groups That Last // Block 84
Led by Jacob Woodward (Beach Students Creative Coordinator) featuring Jessica Biery & Daniel Clayton (former Life Group leaders)
Teens need relationships. It’s one of the few things we can offer that’s better than what they can get elsewhere. This is possible through Life Groups. How can we do life groups in a way that’s consistent, builds real relationships, and prepares our students to be Jesus followers as adults? In this breakout, we’ll hear from two of our best Life Group leaders from the past few years.
Building a Culture of Worship/Excellent Environments // Chapel
Led by Denise Sweat & Rachel De Los Santos (Beach Students Worship Coordinators)
A lot of times we aim to entertain students and build fun environments. Makes sense, right? And it feels enjoyable and effective in the moment. But is it? Is there a way to build a culture where students engage and enjoy worship?
BREAKOUT SESSION 2 (11:30-12:30)
Partnering With Parents – Roundtable Discussion // Room 1101
Led by Sarah Kennedy (Parent & Masters of Divinity with an emphasis in Youth, Family & Culture)
We get about 125-150 hours with students a year. Their parents get about 3000. So why is it that so many student ministries connect to the student and not the parent? In this breakout, we’ll have a roundtable discussion and try to figure out how we can better partner with the parents who have such an influence on the students we are trying to reach.
Transitions: How To Raise Up Students That Don’t Graduate From Faith // Block 84
Led by Elizabeth Reeger (Life Group Leader) & Kelly Shearer (former student)
70% of Christian seniors stop following Jesus in their freshman year of college. That sucks. In this breakout, we’ll discuss how we can be more successful with our senior transition and defeat that statistic. We’ll also hear from one of our recent graduates who has stayed plugged in to faith.
Stress-free Sermons: Preparing and Calendaring // Chapel
Led by Ryan Sweat (Beach Students Student Pastor)
Sermons are important, but they’re far from the most effective way we minister to students. In this breakout, we’ll talk about how you can prepare in a way that leads to more effective sermons AND maximizes your time to be spent less on your sermon and more with teens.
BREAKOUT SESSION 3 (1:30-2:30)
Recruiting & Retaining Leaders // Block 84
Led by Ryan Sweat (Beach Students Student Pastor)
We can’t do ministry alone and if we do, we’re limiting the influence we can have with students. We should be raising up leaders who pour into our students. So how do we find the right leaders? And how do we keep them once we do?
Becoming Student Led/Equipping Students // Chapel
Led by Jacob Woodward (Beach Students Connections Coordinator) featuring Sophia Johns & Kaleb Overby (former students)
Student ministry shouldn’t just be about ministering to students. It should involve raising up students to reach other students. In short, student ministry should be student led wherever possible. In this breakout, we’ll discuss effective student leadership and empowering students to lead right now.
